Abstract
Zoltán Kodály’s ideas are rooted in various sources which he integrated into his own thinking - a combination that produced his own special philosophy on music education. He believed that music should have an essential cultural function and significant social status. The four most important points of his philosophy are: (i) music education should be provided in school for all children; (ii) the basis for music education should be singing; (iii) singing is most effectively taught by a value-centered selection of materials based on the music of the mother-tongue (folk music); and (iv) reading and writing of music should be based on relative solmization (movable doh).
